Alot of people are buying PS3's for various reason's but the increasing target audience are those who arent' interested in simply playing games if at all. They are buying for the blue ray, the ability to be a media center and a chat console to connect with family and friends for free. If they introduce skype, they will cut their console sales because those with computers will be able to chat with PS3 users without purchasing a PS3. This puts money into the hands of their competition, Microsoft.

I don't get that argument, adding a new feature will affect sales? People can already talk to PS3 Users without buying a PS3 through Skype, it's what i use for co op games: Adding Skype or any other voice chat function outside the games will only increase userbase as the lack of this feature is stopping alot of xbox users from moving over. Adding skype would be a no brainer to increase sales. The PS3 is designed to take the box under the TV real estate.

Skype is used as an alternative to the phone and allows video calls. People want to sit on their sofa and have a video call with relatives from all over the world. The ability for Sony to say simply buy the PS3 and the eyetoy (or what ever it is called) and quickly and easily get on skype would boost sales. Everyone knows that as a kid you persuaded your parents to get a computer because it would help with school etc.
When what you really wanted was something to play games on. Well skype could be that excuse for the PS3 along with the media streaming, and Blu Ray. Have Skype run in the background and you solve the cross game chat requests. What is not to like.

In case Sony needs to validate the idea of Skype in the living room, Skype is about to appear on internet enabled TV sets: The PS3 with PlayStation Eye camera is probably the only popular non-PC device in the market NOW which can be used for this purpose. Having just purchased a Internet TV with Vudu/StreamTV on it (don't know if that will include Skype at some point after an upgrade), I definitely see the Internet-enabled TV idea succeeding.

'It just does everything' is a powerful branding statement, but 'everything' is getting redefined by the market very quickly. Sony is well-positioned to ride this trend and sell LOTS more units.I guess it comes down to how much the consoles are discounted below manufacturing cost, on the thinking that buyers will then spring for more controllers, games, downloaded premium content, etc. A little hard to monetize Skype calls or facebook updates if that's all the devices get used for.
I frankly believe that getting the device into consumer hands will drive those kinds of sales regardless if the buyer purchsed the console initially 'just for Skype'. Once they realize it does Blu-ray (in 3D even), that some of those game thingies are really cheap so 'why not', that King Kong in 1080p for $6 isn't a bad deal considering theater prices, that Netflix streaming on a PS3 beats their laptop.you get the idea.
