Colosseum: Road to Freedom (originally Gladiator: Road to Freedom in Japan) is a video game for the PlayStation 2 console. It is a hybrid fighting/RPG game loosely.
Product Description Colosseum: Road to Freedom is set during the height of the Roman Empire in A.D. The game attempts to recreate the brutal reality of life-and-death fights of the gladiators. Players take their character through training strengthen his body and select the skill and equipment that fits their fighting style. The game's star Narcissus the Gladiator saw his village burnt to ashes by Roman soldiers. On his quest Narcissus encounters emperor Commodus (who organizes the games) and his concubine the beautiful Marcia.
The game features character customization that lets players pick weapons armor for arms and legs shields and different types of helmets. There are survival battlers team battles battle royale beast battles (hunt) duels and simulated battles (a stage replaces the arena). If you loved the movie Gladiator, then this is the game for you. This game allows for a very full range of character control, which is very appealing if you have waited for a fighting game with more in depth strategy and fighting options. Examples of this involve the use of a parry, or deflection, of your opponents attack as well as a dodge option (to name a few). These options may make the fighting more difficult, but they ultimately enrich the replayability in my opinion depending on if you want to improve your gladiator's performance. Your character can utilize four different fighting styles, each having their own pros and cons.
On top of that there are several types of events to participate in and an abundance of weapons and armor that you may use to make your gladiator look just like he jumped off the set of Gladiator onto your PS2. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the Roman era and gladitorial matches in particular.

The majority of the game is spent training the player's character and fighting in arena battles. The story in Colosseum takes a backseat in order to allow a higher degree of open-ended gameplay. Players have the freedom to tailor their game avatar to their liking depending on how they answer questions prior to gameplay. Depending on the player's performance, it is possible to pay off the character's debts and still remain a freeman gladiator.
