Try for a list of Hotbird stations. In general terms, only a Freesat HD box will provide you with the Freesat EPG and a generic receiver will restrict you to the now/next information. However you should check if the box has a slot so that you can use a subscription card if you want to go down that route. A Freesat SD box is likely to be of lower build quality, if cheaper and will not access BBC iPlayer and ITV Player catch up services.

Freesat may have more UK stations in HD than Freeview sooner. New satellite deployment should give the capacity and very soon Channel 4HD and NHK WorldHD (Japanese news and documentaries) will be on Freesat. Thanks everyone for the replies. I already have a dish inplace where I live, I just need to get the receiver. The Fortec Star is much much cheaper than the foxsat HDR - what is the main reason for this? I would like to be able to record programs, and I might at some stage want to use a card so I guess it needs to have a card slot. Those are my only real must haves, but even then, I would rather save the money (7 day epg would be really nice).

Are there any cheap options, then middle of the range? Originally I didn't want to spend more than £100 max. Ideally If we could stick to that it would be great, but if there's a deal out there I am willing to invest! The FS doesn't have a built-in hard disc. You add that separately in an external enclosure, or a USB stick would do. If you're able to buy a subscription for some channels then you will need a card, which the FS could take in a CAM. I'm not sure whether Freesat receivers can do that. Most generic receivers don't do 7 day EPG but FS does it quite well. Timed recordings are avaialble from it in the usual way, and the USB connection for that gives flexible options.

Ok chaps, a big thanks for all the advice. I have decided to go with either the FS Passion + (as I want PVR function) OR the Foxsat HDR (not the HD as again I want PVR). I would go with the foxsat HD and use a USB if there was a PVR function (The site spec I have seen doesn't state any PVR function - can anyone confirm?) Can't decide between the Foxsat HDR and the FS passion +. But it would appear that the foxsat HDR with the twin tuner gives more value for money?

(Unless I have missed something) One other thing is, I can't seem to find anywhere online which sells FS boxes (other than ebay?). No, unless you put it through a DVD/HD RECORDER / PVR. We use one & it's very flexible & no issues with record problems but it's not HD.

I've not tested/installed a TM5402 yet but we have installed a lot of the TM5400s Supers. Technomate are a great brand if the spec fits what you want, they are one of the best receivers for motorised satellite & nice to use, generally well designed, easy to edit channels to the order you want, good blind scan etc. No 7 day EPG on 28e now & next but there is 7 day epg on Arabsat & Nilesat & some channels round the arc. Click to expand.Firstly Freesat is a dedicated UK system that organises & locks in the channels to your post code & orders them similar way Freeview, gives you the EPG (now & next &/or I think always 7 day is available on all Freesat stbs), gives you access to the red button digital text services (news/ weather/ sports screens & more program info etc.) and it will auto update overnight when there are program or software changes. Only the Foxsat works as a dedicated genuine Freesat receiver '&' does the other satellites like a generic satellite receiver via a hidden menu- don't know if there is another receiver that does that. The TM5402 is a generic satellite receiver (can be used for all satellites & signals etc.) but on Freesat it displays the channels in the scanned order but then you can edit them into your favourite order- it shows now & next EPG but can shows 7 day EPG on some other satellites like Arabsat as above on the Foxsat EPG. The TM800 is another Linux receiver- most Linux receivers can be modified to do a lot more (usually including 7 day epg if you really need it) but it's more technical using them & there is usually a learning curve to get the most out of them.

Twin tuners let you record one programme while you're watching another. If it's not vitally important to you to be able to do that then you don't need a receiver with two tuners. The plus of a Freesat receiver is that it provides a 7 day Electronic Programme Guide for the channels on 28E that choose to pay for being there. That's what Freesat IS.

The receivers CAN provide channels from other satellites but that's not their main purpose, and it's not as easy on them as it is on generic receivers. Here they all are in the PVR version and most of them ARE rather expensive: Technos give you all the channels you want on any satellite you want, but only give the EPG for some of them. People usually choose the Linux type such as the 800 for special purposes which you don't need, and the choice between the 5402 and 6800 is as much on the basis of post #26 as anything. It's time to think over what you really want to achieve - what channels, whether encrypted, what satellties, what type of receiver, what dish, and so on. The blade 7000 looks very interesting - I think we are installing one this week. Can't keep up with all the new receivers tbh- we focus on the engineering side of installing motorised but you do get to see every receiver- it's got good reports on HD pq & 3D pq - sounds slightly easier to setup too, not seen a report about sensitivity. I must say you've covered a lot of ground on this thread & most of the different types of receivers- all these recievers have plus points & minus points - to me it's hard if you haven't had at least even a cheapo generic receiver for a while to make a more informed choice.

We've actually loaned receivers before now for that reason. One you haven't looked at is the Spiderbox- that's like half way between a Technomate 5402 & a Linux receiver- they have really nice software like the Technomate (generic receivers) & will do some of what a Linux receiver does. Just to confuse more but I'd thought I'd mention them as you are atm between Linux & generic & they are. We've installed a few & they fit the bill for a lot of people. Also a question.

What is the main reason for wanting the Arab channels.
