CONNECT COMMENT EMAIL MORE CARMEL A Newtown, Connecticut, man missing for nearly a year was reportedly seen walking into the Putnam County Correctional Facility on Thursday, police said. Robert Hoagland, 51, a real estate appraiser, vanished from his home around noon on July 28, 2013, several hours after he purchased a map of the eastern half of the United States at a gas station and filled up his Volkswagen Gulf vehicle, Newtown police said. Hoagland's son was the last one to see him that morning before he vanished, leaving behind his car, wallet, driver's license, passport, credit cards, cell phone and even the shoes he was last seen wearing in public, police said. His wife, who was out of town when Hoagland vanished, reported him missing the next day when he failed to show up at the airport to pick her up. Since his disappearance, Newtown police have investigated several unconfirmed sightings of Hoagland in Connecticut and Rhode Island, in addition to cases of mistaken identity. Recently, there have been reported sightings closer to the New York border. In January, Hoagland was reported to have been seen in a Savers store in Brookfield — a town adjacent to Newtown and only a few miles from the New York border. A witness reported seeing Hoagland leave in a vehicle with New York state license plates, officials said. On Thursday, someone visiting an inmate at the Putnam County Correctional Facility told police he saw Hoagland walking into the building, Newtown police said.
